Eric D. Austad, M.D., F.A.C.S. was invited by his long time friend and colleague, Dr. Leonard Glass, to practice in San Diego. Previously, Dr. Austad specialized in Cosmetic Surgery and Head Pain Solutions in Ann Arbor, Michigan. A Board Certified Plastic Surgeon, he is a past president of the Michigan Academy of Plastic Surgeons and a former chairman of the Department of Plastic Surgery at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital in Ann Arbor. Since 1992 he has also been a Clinical Assistant Professor of Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. For twenty years his practice has been highly involved with the surgical management of head pain. This age-old problem has recently undergone revolutionary changes with the advent of Botox therapy and new surgical techniques.

A native of Michigan, Dr. Austad received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan. He also completed his undergraduate education there in three years. After an internship with Louisiana State University at Charity Hospital of New Orleans, he completed a total of six years of residency training in General Surgery, Neurosurgery, and Plastic Surgery at the University of Michigan Medical Center. In the early '70's he also served in the Pacific for two years with the U.S. Navy as a Medical Officer aboard a nuclear submarine and, later, with U.S. Marine aircrews.

Throughout his career he has maintained a strong commitment to research and medical education, with many publications in peer-reviewed medical journals and frequent invited presentations at U.S. and international scientific meetings. For six years he was a member of the Editorial Board of the most prominent plastic journal in the world, Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, and he has won a variety of research awards. In the '80's he pioneered the concept of tissue expansion and published the first laboratory-based study of this technique, which has come to be used in reconstructive surgery worldwide. In addition to his involvement in the care of head pain patients, his academic and publication interests have included the clinical and scientific issues of the breast implant controversy. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and a member of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, as well as a number of other scientific and professional groups.
